Today marks the beginning of the women’s festival Teej in Nepal. Over the next three days, women will dress in red and come together in song, dance and celebration. Red is the color worn by brides in Nepal and also symbolizes power.
💃🏽
Although traditionally Teej was an important religious festival for married women to fast and pray to Lord Shiva for the health and happiness of their husbands (and for unmarried women to pray for a husband) it was also an occasion for women to come together to share through song and dance accounts of their subordination and oppression. Thankfully times are changing and so is the meaning of this ancient festival.
💃🏽
Teej today is being redefined as a celebration of women’s empowerment. A time for both women and men to celebrate feminism.
💃🏽
So in the spirit of feminism and female empowerment - Happy Teej!
